Short note on organisation background

The mission statement of the Department is to promote and support the sustainable and inclusive development of communitiesm both uraban and rural, including Gaeltacht and island communities, thereby fostering better regional balance and alleviating disadvantage, and to advance the use of the Irish language. The Department was established in June 2002, with some 240 staff in 6 locations, mainly in Dublin and Na Forbacha, Co Galway. The Department has specific responsibility for a range of functions including community development programmes, local development, revitalising areas by planning, investment and development, volunteering and rural development initiatives.
