Short note on organisation background

KLS was founded in 1995 to promote Karelian language and culture. It is the main guardian of the karelian speaking people in Finland. The Society has managed to get official status for the karelian language as nonregional national minority language in Finland ( President's decree 27th of November 2009). KLS has wide cooperation with Russian Karelian NGOs and authorities.

There is an academic chair of Karelian language and culture in Joensuu University (Eastern Finland), thanks to lobbyig of the society. KLS is publishing 10 - 15 books and audiobooks per annum. On the website there is bookshop, digital library, pdf-newspaper and internetradio. Last autumn KSL opened the first karelian language nest.  Many adult education centers have teaching of karelian language all over the country. The teaching in grammar schools is starting this year.
