Project description GLEO recognises the best practices in the promotion of spoken Irish in creative and innovative ways in both primary and post-primary schools teaching through the medium of English all over the island of Ireland.

This scheme, which was run as a pilot scheme for the first time in 2006, was developed in order to give recognition to the effort of schools, teaching through the medium of English, in promoting spoken Irish. In 2007, post-primary schools were allowed to submit applications under the scheme for the first time.

Function of the Scheme

a)   GLEO is usually advertised in October. Schools are contacted and are asked to apply for the scheme. An application form must be filled in by a member of the teaching staff and signed by the principal. This form is then sent on to Foras na Gaeilge who in turn forward it onto their adjudicators chosen for the relevant regions.

b)   The entire island is divided into six regions, as follows,

Region A

Northern Ireland

Region B

Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Longford, Roscommon

Region C

Galway, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary

Region D

Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Westmeath

Region E

Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow

Region F

Carlow, Laois, Offaly, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford

c)   The adjudicators examine these forms so as to draw up a short list of six primary schools and three post-primary schools from each region. This shortlist may be advertised in the media in order use it as publicity.

d)   Two adjudicators are assigned to each region. Adjudicators are chosen from the following organisations or educational backgrounds in order carry out this work.

a.      Lecturers in Teaching Methods, Colleges of Education.

b.     Education Boards and Centres

c.      Other education experts.

e)   The adjudicators assess the named schools and then visit those schools which are on the shortlist. In April, they make their decision. Two primary schools and one post-primary school are selected from each region as those schools that are to receive the GLEO award 08/09.

f)    These schools are asked to attend a presentation ceremony, usually in May, where the recognition award is given to them.

See below, the list of successful schools who attained the GLEO recognition award for Scheme 07/08.
