Aberystwyth University is a public research university in Aberystwyth, Wales. The university has almost 8,000 students studying across 3 academic faculties and 17 departments.
The aims and objectives of the University are outlined in its charter. The following is listed in this document as one of the University’s core objectives: ‘to give special attention, itself or jointly with others, to the educational needs of Wales, having regard to the Welsh language and the culture, the economic development and the social traditions of Wales’.
Aberystwyth University contributes to the promotion of linguistic diversity in a variety of ways, in particular:
- By upholding a comprehensive bilingual policy that treats both Welsh and English as official working languages, which means that any services of a public nature offered by the institution can be accessed through the medium of either Welsh or English.
- By playing a leading role in Wales in the development and promotion of Welsh medium provision at the higher education level. Students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) at Aberystwyth are able to study an increasing number of university courses through the medium of Welsh.
- By supporting multidisciplinary academic research that focuses on areas such as language policy and planning, language revitalisation, bilingual education and language legislation.
