Short note on organisation background

Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant is a higher education establishment which provides undergraduate courses through the medium of both Welsh and English.

The university has adopted the principle that in the conduct of public business in Wales, it will treat the English and Welsh languages on a basis of equality. Under Section 5 of the Welsh Language Act 1993, the university as a publicly funded body has been required to prepare a Welsh Language Scheme which sets out how it would give effect to that principle when providing services to the public in Wales. The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 transferred the functions of the Welsh Language Act 1993 to the Welsh Language Commissioner.

Over a period of time, Welsh Language Schemes will be superseded by statutory standards which will place duties on institutions to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language and to ensure that Welsh is not treated less favourably than English. They will note how institutions are expected to provide services to the public and how they will treat and use the Welsh language. The university is committed to taking positive steps to implement functions under the new Measure.

Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant has has an elected representative in NPLD’s Steering Committee.
