The Provincial Council of Bizkaia, in collaboration with the sporting associations and federations of Bizkaia, has taken a further step to consolidate the use of the Basque language among all the people and the organizations involved in the territory’s sports system.

The BIKEE project – Bizkaian Kirola Ere Euskaraz – promotes sport practices as a sphere in which people can make a natural use of the Basque language from the earliest ages. Thus, sport, in addition to being a tool for a comprehensive development, is also an opportunity space for the progress and normalization of the Basque language.

The first step of the BIKEE project was to encourage the use of the Basque language within the sports federations: 37 out of 44 sports federations are already involved in the project. In this second stage, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia recognizes the work done by of all actors involved in the sports world of the territory to promote the use of the Basque language in order to ensure that communication with any agent involved in Biscayan sport can be carried out in Basque language.
