The school system is vital to the preservation of minority or regional languages across Europe. For many Occitans, Bretons or Scotts, to name a few, school is the only link to the traditional languages of the territories they live in.
Over the past months, due to the pandemic outbreak, schools from all over the world have closed their doors and students have not been able to attend classes.
Therefore, how is this lockdown affecting the preservation of minority languages? And what kind of initiatives are, or should be taken in order to stimulate the use and learning of these languages outside of school?
Estibaliz Alkorta, Government of the Basque Country, Enlli Thomas, Bangor University (Wales) and Iain Caimbeul, University of the Highlands and Islands (Scotland) intervene in this webinar moderated by Julie Duval, Coppieters Foundation, to shed some light on those questions.
